I've been thinking a lot about the Joan Westenberg post that I linked to yesterday. Is there really an allure of status around doing things the hard way? I think there is, and I'll usually take the cred where I can get it.
Last night I was thinking about this in the context of blogging. As much as I love the idea of static websites, it's hard to argue that they're not the "hard mode" of blogging. I spent half a day this week making changes to my Hugo templates. It wasn't as fun as it sounds. Then, PageFind stopped indexing the site until I reinstalled it. I'm not in the mood for that kind of thing. Then there's hosting, deployments, Git, and my Emacs function for creating posts. It's a lot, when you think about it, and I've been thinking about it. It's hard mode.
Easy mode is what I'm in the mood for. I noticed that when posting to both Ghost and Hugo lately, I reached for Ghost because it's easier. And with Magic Pages handling the hosting, I can just type and hit "Publish" and not worry about anything else. Mmmm, easy peasy.
Ghost feels like the right level of difficulty, so I'm back here again. Status be damned.
A fun side effect is that I get my @jack@baty.net Fediverse handle again.
I'm on what seems like a bi-weekly routine of changing my blogging platform. I can't help it, it's what I do.
